Styling a Site for the iPhone

January 5th, 2010  |  Published in Design, iPhone

Apple’s iPhone App Review process leaves many of us stuck between a rock and a hard place. What can we do to more effectively push out content without having to deal with Apple? A month’s wait for approval for App submissions and updates isn’t unheard of.

Gruber has discussed the idea that we move in the direction of web apps. This can be a great solution, if you’re an online news site, and don’t need advanced device feedback or complex interaction. This is what we did for the ABA Journal mobile site, and it’s working well enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Drop Legacy

August 28th, 2009  |  Published in Apple, Random, Rants

Purely opinion from me, but relevant: Apple is doing the right thing, dropping legacy support, and not trying to coddle to every possible hardware/software combo out there.

The last thing we need is for them to try to be like Microsoft. They’re still scrambling all over each release of Windows, trying to support apps from the ‘98 and even ‘95 days. Not good. If businesses are too cheap and/or lazy to upgrade like the rest of us, screw ‘em.

Design evolution of an interface

TapTapTap released “Convert” for iPhone a while back. While I’m a fan of ConvertBot, this one is awesome, too. Check out the incredible overview of the UI design/revision process on it.

Also see their perspective on the app design process. I’m thinking I should follow that approach a bit more closely.

Average User and Safari 4

I had installed Safari 4 beta on my MacBook Pro this past week, and then went down to visit my sister at her college. She wanted to borrow my laptop for a minute to look something up, launched Safari, and a few minutes later, I hear her grumbling and angry.

AddressBook data validation

I’ve been battling an issue with some code I wrote: an odd bug where the client’s iPhone wouldn’t display all of the contacts on their device when they were testing it.

Weightbot for iPhone

December 5th, 2008  |  Published in iPhone

This is an amazing app for design inspiration on an iPhone app. Most designers and programmers aren’t skilled with UX work, so I usually try to steer clients towards using standard controls if they aren’t skilled designers. But this app just made my jaw drop: http://tapbots.com/weightbot. I’m looking forward to seeing what else they come up with.
